BeLUG lid #892 - Johan Timmerman

Welcome all to a new episode of Meet BeLUG, the blog series where we try to introduce all our members to each other.

And who do we give the word to today?

TIMMERMAN JOHAN, lidnr: 892
Timmerman Johan, member number 892

En wat is jouw intresse in Lego?
And what is your interest in Lego?

Toen kon men hier weinig grijze blokjes vinden.
My preference lies with the purchasing of all sorts of bricks to be able to build own creations.  When I actually buy sets, these are collector`s items or hard to find.
Even when buying a new set I`m already thinking of what I can do with it.
At the moment I have about 40.000 bricks.  My biggest purchase was when I did a voyage through Denmark (including of course Lego Land) back in 1990.  It was rather difficult then to find grey elements here.  So in every city I visited I bought all the supplement sets with grey bricks.  It amounted to a full travelling case!

So what have been your favorite theme`s over the years?

Mostly the collector`s items like the Ferrari, VW Bug, Lamborghini, Racing Bikes.
Technic has also been something I liked for while.  I also recreated various historical buildings from Ghent.

Heb je recentelijk nog toffe dingen aangekocht?
Did you buy some cool stuff in recent times?

Only special additional elements for my MOC.

What makes you especcially proud in your collection?

Most things I build don`t remain forever.  When I get a new idea, the rest if demolished.  I usually get these ideas during world voyages, and then I have inspiration for new creations.

Do you have a "Holy Grail" set, and if so, which one?

Neen
No

What are your build- and collectioningplans for the near and far future?

At the moment I`m trying to finish my MOC for Wetteren.  This is a Vietnamese junk (Halong Bay) of 80 cm in length with a complete scene of water, beach and chalkrocks.  The total surface is 2 square meters.  See the attached picture, but it isn`t finished yet.
For 2017 I`d love to build a 3D dolphin kumping out of the water.

Do you still remember what your first Lego set was?

Men kon toen enkel basisdozen kopen .
The first set (probably the base set 066, which was 715 BEF back then) is something I can`t exactly remember as more then 50 years have past since then.  Back then, we received supplementing sets as gifts, but only in white and red colours!  One could only buy basic sets then.  Then the first wheels appeared on the market, with the grey rubber tyres.  As well as those wooden storage boxes with sliding lids.

Did you have a "Dark Age" and how did you get out of them?

There has indeed been a period of ten years when the bricks didn`t came out of the closet.  Studies and work made me lack time for it.  Luckily I got married then and while moving house the Lego reappeared.  And I started again as such.  With expanding the brick collection.
When we moved to our villa I decorated a playroom which is full of bricks, at times to the annoyance of my wife who isn`t allowed to clean in there then.  But yeah, you just have to do it yourself then.

Many thanks for talking to us Johan!

BeLUG General Assembly 2016

If your a club, you need to have a general assembly, that`s something that is just required in your regulations.

So this morning, those that wanted could join in for a chat in the venue, De Maalderij, at Sterrebeek, where *probably* the club day will also be held, but more info on that when we get to that point.

While of course the meeting started with the necessary introductions, and the financial overview which won`t be made public, we then moved on to some more shareable information, like... members.

Here you can see the slow and steady climbing rate of our members, presented by the club president, and for your easiness also the graphis for the division geographically.

Our LEGO Ambassador also took the word for a moment to share some information of the LEGO policy rules for 2016 and how they will support RLUG`s this year, as well as some restrictions implemented.

Next on the agenda was the overview of the 2015 events, and the events coming in 2016.  This might also be another opportune moment to ask that if anyone has some ideas for an activity on the club day, feel free to send them to us!

But then we came to the `election phase`.  As you can see, our current board consists of 5 members, as both Tom Gilson and Sieger Douree had to resign their positions due to professional obligations, and where thanked for their efforts in the past.

We also had 5 effective members resigning from this status, and the new candidates where introduced and the assembly would vote on them `joining the ranks` (more information on what an effective member is can be found on the BeLUG site, but this infographic gives a bit of an idea on the club structure).

All four of the candidates for Effective Member membership past the votes, meaning that Maxim, Andy, Stefan and myself have been accepted.  Thanks to all the voters for the confidence and accepting our sollicitations.

But we also needed to add two more board members, and in order to pass the proposed board, the club statures needed to be slightly modified.  This was all voted in one go, and Inge joined the board as the new Secretary, while... yours truly became the board member putting the focus on the social media thingies.  Hmmm, so I`ve been an effective member for like 3 minutes, must be a new record lol.  Again, thanks to all that voted and the board to put your faith in lil` ol` me.

We then had another rather important point on the agenda, but I`m afraid I can`t be placing it down here just yet until it has been placed on the main site and all first and permanent, so that is something I`ll be coming back on in a future post.

Another rather important point on the agenda, which had many looking forward to this year`s meeting, was the revelation of the 40 people that would go on the Billund trip coming June.  And here is the list of those that are going:

Sorry, I`m not allowed to post it before the club board itself has had the time to contact all the participants ;-)

All in all, it was a very informative assembly, the sandwiches where great (thanks Inge and Wilfried) and all things to be voted on passed the vote, so I think we can say we are going strong!

And all present received a small gift as well, courtesy of the club.

So to put it all together in a blink of an eye:

1. We are financially healthy
2. We have a good idea which sort of media to use for promotion of the Brick Mania`s in 2016 to make sure more people find their way.
3. Our members are still growing.
4. We have 4 new Effective members, and two new additions to the board
5. The participants for Billund are known.

Now onwards to an even better 2016!

Thanks for the additional pictures to Zwits Vandervelden and Tom De Bruyker

What`s Hot and what`s not: the result

About two weeks ago, I asked the question about which LEGO themes where popular, and which not at all, amongst our followers on Facebook and the forum.

I received about 30 answers to this, and here are the top 3 results for each...

Now, let`s start with the themes which aren`t liked amongst those that replied.

This is actually a big list, as the top choices received both 4 votes.  Neither Bionicle, nor the new Nexo Knights are bewildering our community, and they are the `winners` of this category.

Placed behind them, all with 2 votes to round out this top 3.  LEGO`s new range of Angry Birds, just released, already finds itself amongst them, alongside some of their mainstay lines in City and Technic.  But also Minecraft is amongst them, which I can understand as those are basically base brick sets with a franchise pricetag.

So that was it for the `bad news` section of the results, let`s move on to those we found popular.

On the third spot, with 2 votes, we find a shared duo of on the one hand the Tolkien range, and on the other the Technic range.

The silver medal also finds itself tied for the result, as 2 ranges obtained 3 votes each: Lego City, taking avenge for not being liked as well, and the Expert Modular series.

But can there be any doubt about which range came out on top?  I think not, considering it is about their biggest yielding line ever since it`s creation back in 1999, and it sweeped this poll with a crushing 8 votes, meaning it was picked by almost 1 in 3 of the person`s that replied...

STAR WARS

Time for another one of our Meet BeLUG episodes, in which we are trying to introduce our members to each other through a sort of member profile.

Vandaag is het de beurt aan...

Wat is je interesse in Lego?
What is your intrest in Lego?

Amongst others, I collect the Modulars, the exclusive sets, and since recently also the Star Wars sets.  The building of these sets grants me a lot of fullfilment.

Which have been you`re favorite theme`s over the years?

The Western sets & Ninja system could rattle my cage the most in the past.  Now it`s mostly all about the exclusive sets and Star Wars to collect, but the modulars are to my liking as well.

Heb je recentelijk nog toffe dingen aangeschaft?
Did you buy some nice things recently?

Redelijk wat oa. Hq Ghostbusters, Ewok village, R2D2, 10177 Boeing 787 Dreamliner etc...
Quite a lot incl. Ghostbusters HQ, Ewok Village, R2-D2, 10177 Boeing 787 Dreamliner etc...

What are you especially proud of in your collection?

Lego nesquik bunny is één van mijn favoriete.
Lego Nesquick bunny is one of my absolute favorites.

What are the build- and collecting plans for the near and far future?

Ik zie wel wat er uitkomt :)
I`ll see what comes my way :)

Wat was je eerste Lego set?
Which was your first Lego set?

lego western fort legoredo. Weeesssteeerrnnn :D
Lego Western Fort Legoredo.  Weeesteerrrrnnn :D

Did you had a Dark Ages, and how did they got to pass?

Like so many, I was intrested in lego since a young age.  But around my 14th the intrest dwindled down.  About 10 years later it was a big coincidence that resparked my intrest.  A buddy of mine gave me a set from the City range.  Afterwards I went to Miami (Florida - USA) and there I found myself in a Lego store.  After doing some research, I quickly found out I missed some interesting sets.  But more then 2 years later I`m proud of what I collected in sets.

Thanks Yuthana for your contribution.  Are you the next one to be featured here?  Then send you`re file, which can be found on the Meet BeLUG tab of this blog, back to us together with a selfie and some pictures, and we will handle the rest!

What`s hot and what`s not?

Heya all,

Today, I`m going to ask all of you who follow BeLUG a question, whistled into my ear by one of my `little birds`.  Which is just a fancy way of saying that someone provided me with an idea to work out, but that doesn`t has the same ring to it now does it.

And okay, I might have lied a bit above... I am actually going to ask TWO questions to y`all.  Simple ones, that will probably take you about 10 seconds to think about, and another 10 seconds to answer, so let`s say for easyness sake...

I need 30 seconds of your time!

Now, the questions are these:

1. What is your FAVORITE (sub)theme of LEGO?

and

2. Which is the theme you really don`t like at all?

Simple, right?  So tell us here, on Facebook, on Twitter or on the forum!

I will be compiling those answers, and in a non-defined space of time, which is somewhere between the intitial (hopefully) waves of responses and let`s say a week or two / three, when everyone had the time to read this, I`ll be posting the full results.

To give an idea, here is my personal `Hot or Not`...

1. The Hobbit

2. City

And that is basically all I would like to ask.  feel free to elaborate on your choices, but this is not a requirement at all!

BeLUG lid #275 - Hans Demol

Today in Meet BeLUG we have someone that is for many the `face` of the club on a Brick Mania, because shortly after walking through the entrance he will ask you for your postal code and how you found out about that particular BM.

Hans is the 'Public Relations Guy' of the club, and niw he tells you some more about his hobby, because now it is our turn to question him!

Zo, wie is Hans?
So, who is Hans?

Hans Demol, lidnummer 275.
Hans Demol, membernumber 275.  You`ll find me on the internet under the name HD_LEGO (I`d chosen that name before I knew the word LEGO was so protected.  Nowadays I would have chosen another nickname, but I didn`t want to change it all afterwards...).

Everything I create which is more or less relevant, ends up on my Flickr page.

Wat is je intresse in Lego?
What is your interest in Lego?

Ha! Dàt wordt geen kort antwoord... ;)
Ha, that won`t be a short answer... ;)

On the one hand, I enjoy putting together a nice set (the Modulars (like so many), the winter series, some of the Architecture range and by extension some of the other exclusive sets which touch my buttons).  Working on a set can be very relaxing.

On the other hand, I love creating things.  Though in all honesty, I don`t consider myself that good a builder.  Our club has far better builders... ;)

Even toelichten...
But I do enjoy to create something that is connected to my other hobbies or things that are close to me.

Let me enlighten you...

A first series of creations are my Rock Song Titles.  Those are small creations in which the audience has to guess the rock song shown through the build.  Music is my only hobby that has had a presence throughout my whole life.  I was attending concerts since the age of 13 (the first one was Queen!) and still do so averaging 2 - 3 concerts a month.  I like to call the AB in Brussels my second home ;)

With the creation of these rock song titles I can combine both my hobbies in harmony.  Considering I`m getting a day older, some songs will be seen as `old school` ;)

The whole series is on the link above.

I also enjoy working on mosaics.  For the same reasons I like working on a set: it`s relaxing.  Once you have finished drawing the mosaic on paper (your schematic that tells you where to put which element), you just have to execute, with a nice music and a good drink ;-)

My mosaics are also influenced by my other spheres of interest: Never Too Old To Rock (again rock music, but with Homer Simpson - I never say no to a good animation), Stylo from Gorillaz, a portrait of my father for his eightiest birthday or very recently a 'Game & Watch' mosaic to show my renewed intrest in these archeological pieces of Nintendo ;)

I also made a couple of GBC-modules.  My knowledge of Technic is limited, so you won`t find any ingenious devices with me.  But I did enjoy building a few GBC modules within certain themes.

Personally, I like my converting of the 'Lion CHI Temple' from the Chima range the most.  It does give a feel of satisfaction when you see those looks of awe (both small and large) around the GBC course on an event. Some short clips of my creations can be found in the link above.

(With this little piece about the GBC I must thank Maico Arts and Jean-Marc Nimal for their support.  Before I ever started my first module, I never thought I would be able to do it).

Furthermore, a lot of my LEGO time goes towards BeLUG since I`m the responsible within the board for the communciation (in both official languages overhere - most of the mails and newsletters of the past years have been from my hand).  this is indirect LEGO time but still it`s LEGO time ;)

I`m glad I can help with the building of this club... I think we all can agree that it`s great to be part of a club of like-minded people...

I also like doing some photography (the squirrel on the flyer for Brick Mania Wetteren 2016 for example) and have designed some flyers (I personally think the one for Brick Mania Wetteren 2016 was the best I made).

Finally I like to mention the Time Traveller club project (which was brought to life by Maxim Illegems).  I`m a huge fan of this!  It has the huge benefit that everyone can do it`s own thing (in his own style, with his own resources) but that they are gathered together on an event into one large `club creation`.  There should be more of that kind of initiatives!

What have been your favorite theme`s over the years?

Actually none.  As a child I just played with the bricks which had been played with before by my older sister and brother (a box of bulk in other words).  There weren`t any sets, series,... as an adult I still haven`t gotten any prejudice for certain classic theme`s.

Heb je recentelijk nog toffe dingen aangeschaft?
Did you buy some nice things recently?

Apart from the things that are regular for me (modular buildings, seasonal sets, architecture sets) I thought the Airjitzu Temple a great addition: supernice building, great build.

Is there something you`re exceptionally proud of in your collection?

The set I received with my participation at the LEGO Inside Tour in 2014, numbered and signed by the designer.

Do you have a 'Holy Grail' set, and if so which one?

Neen.
No.

What are the building- or collectingplans for the near and far future?

I want to create some more of those Game & watch mosaics in order to make a series out of it.  I`m also busy reworking a MOC into a new Time Traveller module.

Wat was je eerste Lego set?
What was your first Lego set?

Geen idee. Dat moet heel lang geleden zijn. Echt geen idee...
No idea.  That must have been a very long time ago.  Really no idea...

Did you have a Dark Ages period and how do you came out of it?

My dark Ages have taken a loooooong time... I only emerged in 2010 at the tender age of 43.  We where on a holiday near Munich and I wanted to visit the LEGOLAND nearby.  that`s where I discovered how much LEGO had evolved over the past years, and what the possibilites where.  I also say some very nice sets there (like the Green Grocer), but thought it insane that people would pay 150 euro for that... ;)

From then on, it all went fast...

Bedankt Hans voor je bijdrage!
Thanks Hans for your contribution!
